…we’re lookin’ for snow! There is none in the forecast, and since our winters have gotten warmer and shorter, it will probably be a long wait…but we’re prepared for it, if and when it comes!
We’re baby boomers, and all things commercial seem directed at baby boomers, these days. The commercials on television are backed up with rock songs that supposedly remind us of our wild young days, the vehicles are looking more retro all the time, and the hundreds of motorcycles going by our house these days are being ridden by old hippies with hair flying out the back of their helmets, pot bellies tucked under leather jackets. Everyone is seeking a return to the glory days of youth, right?
For my husband, that would mean a trip back to the old one-room schoolhouse where he spent 6 years of grade school. He was reminded of those days last weekend when we visited a flea market and saw this sled hanging high on the wall. Now, Stan has never really cared about antiques or the old things I love…but this was different. It was an immediate, tangible reminder of carefree days full of fun when he was a boy. Immediately, he started telling me about the snowy, icy days when the kids would take sleds (if they had them) to the Upper Brixey school to enjoy during recess. The kids who didn’t have sleds would all pile on with those who did, and by the time they reached the bottom of the long, steep hill, most would have fallen off. But, oh! the fun! Their teacher would join in, and on those special days, recess would last longer than some of their classes.
So, the ladder was summoned, the sled taken down by the store owner, and now it makes its home with us. Hopefully, we’ll get a snow this winter that will allow him one more exciting ride down the hill.
This was the sight that greeted me yesterday morning when I stepped out our back door just before sunrise…
what a beautiful morning! And I was also greeted by this pair…
Chip and Justacat, hungry as always and ready for their breakfast.
My daughter and family needed a photo shoot for Christmas cards…
and this was the best one of 53 shots. Wonder why it took so many? Mr. Wyatt had a bad case of the wiggledy fidgets.
My sweet husband had a birthday last week, and guess who helped blow out the candles?
If I had been determined to remind him that he’s now much older than I am, I would have had 56 candles on the cake. But, loving, considerate wife that I am, I settled on only a few…just enough for a two-year-old to have to huff and puff a little. Now I have 12 more days to keep reminding him that he’s married to a much younger wife.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Glad you got the sled – we all need to indulge in a little nostalgia now and then! The picture for the Christmas cards is great, and it looks like your husband’s birthday was a lot of fun! Wonder how many candles he’ll put on your cake?
Wil has memories of the one room school also for the first 6 grades. I was a city girl so….. lol Wil’s birthday was last week also..the 27th. No little ones to delight us with spit on the cake tho. Too bad for us. I just wrapped and put into one of the flat rate boxes what little we could send them for Christmas. I got them the Fisher Price kids cameras. They weren’t cheap but I don’t care. Just mailing the package is 35.00 but I can’t do for them like the others and I love doing for them when they are little. Jeremiah will be 8 on Christmas Day and Sydney will be 6 in Feb. We sure do miss being able to get our hands on them.
You just gave me ideas about getting our sled out and decorating it. Thanks! I finally found the living room floor this afternoon, now on to the kitchen table! Success is in view! Took me forever this year to get all the decorations out and up. Old age is much slower than I’d imagined.
Oh, I LOVE the old sled and the story to go with it….I hope we get a BIG snow for Stan this winter…hopefully in time for Christmas.
The photo of Sus and family is great. What a cute group!
Wish Stan a happy late birthday for me…will talk more soon.
I love the sled — hope your husband will have many more than just one more opportunity to ride down the hill!
We just walked in the door from having breakfast. As we came through the door the my husband said, “last night one of the windows we saw had Christmas puppies for sale! I think you would really like another dog, wouldn’t you?!” I just smiled! I got online and here is your dog picture…is that a brittany spaniel or springer? We had a brittany and he was such a great companion for me! On our walks in the forest preserve Sarge would run just ahead of me to see if there was anyone coming around the bend…such a good dog!
Okay, I just turned 56 and the one room school house seems as if it was way beyond my time! We’re old! Love the sled! In fact, that would make a beautiful Christmas card!
I’m inspired–going downstairs TODAY to get the old sled and set it out by the lightpost, decorated with a pretty bow…..
my dad still has the 6-foot toboggan he had when he was a boy, back in the 30s and 40s….he’s rebuilt it more than once, and we’ve spent many winter days through the years of my childhood and then my children’s childhoods riding it down various hills…what memories
this week was my folks 50th wedding anniversary, and we had a beautiful evening celebrating it….hope to find the time to blog on it soon.
how did you like Hannah? what’s next?
love the old sledge….I remember….all us children used to have some kind of wooden sledge, and drag them up to the top of the hills…down we would go, over the ant hills, across the tummocks of grass – good memories.
