  • …I’ve loved him since I was 14.

Yes, my husband, too, but this guy is special to me in another way. When I was a dreamy-eyed, romantic-notioned high schooler, his voice spoke sweetly to that girl.

When I was a young married wife, his voice spoke to our tender, early love. And now that I’m a…well, a dreamy-eyed, romantic-notioned, white-haired, 39-years-married farm girl, his voice still speaks to me in the same way.

When I turn on the stereo and those golden, liquid tones of Misty, or Chances Are, or Small World pour out with a resonance and richness unlike any other voice on the planet, my stress level goes down a notch, the frown lines begin to disappear, and a smile begins to play on my lips. Oh, Johnny, you know my heart.

About eight years ago, when our daughter was a student at College of the Ozarks near Branson, we were visiting for a basketball game. After the game, we went to a local restaurant for a late supper, and a Chamber of Commerce representative was conducting a survey, asking how they could improve Branson. My immediate response? Bring in Johnny Mathis for a concert! If Andy Williams could make it in Branson, wouldn’t Johnny draw a crowd?

All these long years later, someone in Branson has honored my request and brought this wonderful singer in for a two-night stand. With tickets and my heart in my hand, we’re off! I’m blessed with a husband who tolerates my love for another guy and will even take me to see him, even though he might prefer a concert by a country singer. But after 39 years of listening to Johnny, Stan has actually grown to like him, too!

Stay tuned…I’ll let you know if this guy can still sing!

  • Chances are he can. (Sorry, I had to do it.) He is amazing and I remember for years my Dad reminding me that he had been deaf and still succeeded (reminding me that partial deafness cannot defeat get in my way). Have fun!

  • Have a great time! I liked him too, although I have to say, my heart is breaking today because Paul Newman died!! And, hmmmm, I need to go visit the site of the person who made the comment before me – Johnny Mathis deaf?

  • Wil and I got a good chuckle out of this post. If we EVER find a turn table like we want we have his albums even tho Wil is a dyed in the wool country music fan. During our marriage I introduced him to musicals and pop and oldies and he introduced me to country. It all mixed. Have fun! I want to go to a Welk reunion show at some point but they always do them on Labor Day weekend.

  • YOU LUCKY LADY!!!!   I love his music too.   Re: the comment above…..I didn’t realize his hearing was affected either.

  • How neat! He DOES have the sweetest, most mellow voice. I’m so glad you’re getting to go hear him….let us know how it goes – (This is such a cute post!)

  • Enjoy!  I know he is a singer, but for the life of me I can’t think of one song!  He must not have been my favorites, but I can’t wait to hear how you loved being there with the one you love!

  • Well, you have fun with that, then. I did a pity concert trip to Manilow once, so I can relate to Stan. What a good guy!

  • Enjoy the concert.  Yes, he has a very mellow, soothing voice.

  • Tell him I love him!

I too have loved him most of my life–in my case, since I was 6.  Yes, even then I was  dreamy-eyed and romantic-notioned!  His warm voice, gentle tunes, and loving words have always just perfectly expressed the tune of my heart.  I still listen to his old records, and my husband sympathetically buys them for me whenever he sees one (hence, I have duplicate copies of some).  When I want to tell my husband how much I love him, Johnny’s words are the ones that bubble up from deep inside me.   And my favorite Christmas albums are his. When Johnny says it’s the most  wonderful time of the year, I joyfully agree while I’m pulling out another box of decorations or baking another batch of cookies!

Have a wonderful time.  Do my watching and listening too, since I won’t be there.

  • You lucky lady! I love Mathis, and his songs bring back so many memories of my teenage years. My husband and I also went to a concert last night, but a very different kind. I bought him 2 tickets for his birthday earlier this month to see ZZ TOP. It was a great show, but must admit that’s the first time in my 54 years I’ve ever been frisked!  Interesting. Now I have something new to tell my grandchildren!
